The dragon boat festival 端午节

The dragon boat festival is celebrated on the fifth day of may in lunar calendar.

端午节在每年的农历五月五日庆祝。

On this day people eat zongzi and row dragon boat. Why?

在这一天人们会吃粽子划龙舟。这是为什么呢？

This can be traced back to thousands of years ago in the Warring State Period,

这要追溯到几千年前的战国时期，

there was a poet of the state of Chu named Qu Yuan.

楚国有个诗人叫屈原。

He loved his country and wanted to make it stronger.

他热爱自己的国家 想把它变的更强大。

He gave so many good suggestionsto the king.

他给君王提了很多好的建议。

However, some of his reforms violated the interests of the noble ministers.

但是，他提出的一些改革触犯了一些权贵的利益。

So he was ostracized and exiled.

所以他遭到排挤并流放。

Finally, Chu was defeated by Qin，

后来楚国被秦国打败。

he was devastated and couldn't do anything, so he jumped into the Miluo river, and died for his country.

他悲痛欲绝 但是又无能为力所以他跳进了汨罗江以身殉国。

In order to commemorate Qu Yuan, people boated on the river to express their sorrow,

为了纪念屈原人们荡舟江河之上以此来寄托哀思，

and they throw food into the river to prevent fish and shrimp from spoiling his body,

他们向江中投入食物来阻挡鱼虾吃掉他的身体，

later, it became the custom of eating zongzi and rowing dragon boats.

后来就成了吃粽子和赛龙舟的习俗。
